FarmVille – Leveling Costs
July 15, 2009
So, I’ve been looking over the numbers in terms of leveling. To this end I considered several scenarios. I won’t go though the full numbers of each since that would make this post probably 3 pages long. But the scenarios and their results are posted below. In each situation I assumed that you started with 144 of the chosen crop ready for harvest and $0.
| Strategy – Plant Peppers and power level using soybeans |
| Result - 1,540 xp gained and $18 left over |
-
| Strategy – Plant and harvest strawberries all day, at the end of the day before the final strawberry planting, power level using soybeans. |
| Result – 2,592 xp gained and $0 left over |
-
| Strategy - Maximize tree placement excluding edges and 12 plots, which are preserved for peppers. After harvesting everything, power level using soybeans and then replant the peppers. |
| Result – 1,389 xp gained and $24 left over |
-
| Strategy – Same as scenario 3, but replace cherry trees with orange trees |
| Result - 1,436 xp gained and $24 left over |
-
| Strategy - same as scenario 3b, but replace peppers with strawberries, harvesting them at every opportunity. |
| Result - 1,505 xp gained and $0 left over. |
Now, you may be asking yourself. Why bother with trees or peppers then? If strawberries are so much better? Well, the other situations actually result in more money. The Profit each day if it had not been spent power leveling would of been.
Scenario 1 - $11,088
Scenario 2 - $8,640
Scenario 3 – $12,534
Scenario 3b – $13,824
Scenario 3c – $13,620
So, now you might be looking at this as I did and wondering. Why does it look like the less money I make the faster I’ll level?
This one I’ll admit had me stumped for awhile. Basically, what happens is that while you do make more money, the amount you have to spend on each xp increases. So, even though you might have more money you can’t actually purchase as much xp. This is represented by how much it costs you to replant all of your seeds, thus leaving you with not as much money to power level with.
Below, I’ve broken the values down per as they are for a single field. Looking at how much xp you can gain per day, if you were to spend all of your profits power leveling. Peppers still do better then any other crop that takes a day or longer. But it lags behind the sub day crops simply because it is so expensive to plant.
| Plant | Total Cost Per day | Xp Gained | Cost per Xp | Profit Per day | Xp via PL | Total Cost per Xp | Total Xp Per day |
| Strawberries | 150 | 12 | 12.5 | 60 | 6 | 11.67 | 18 |
| Eggplant | 20 | 1.5 | 13.33 | 24 | 2.4 | 11.28 | 3.9 |
| Wheat | 16.67 | 1 | 16.67 | 21.67 | 2.17 | 12.1 | 3.17 |
| Soybeans | 30 | 3 | 10 | 33 | 3.3 | 10 | 6.3 |
| Squash | 27.5 | 1.5 | 18.3 | 33 | 3.3 | 12.6 | 4.8 |
| Pumpkin | 135 | 6 | 22.5 | 69 | 6.9 | 15.81 | 12.9 |
| Artichokes | 21.25 | 0.75 | 28.33 | 29.75 | 2.98 | 13.69 | 3.73 |
| Rice | 120 | 4 | 30 | 72 | 7.2 | 17.14 | 11.2 |
| Cotton | 30 | 1 | 30 | 39 | 3.9 | 14.08 | 4.9 |
| Peppers | 85 | 3 | 29.33 | 77 | 7.7 | 15.14 | 10.7 |
| Pineapple | 55 | 1.5 | 36.67 | 66 | 6.6 | 14.94 | 8.1 |
| Watermelon | 36.5 | 0.75 | 48.33 | 50.75 | 5.08 | 14.94 | 5.8 |
| Potatoes | 50 | 1 | 50 | 65 | 6.5 | 15.33 | 7.5 |
Since I’m sure some people are wondering. I’ll explain the whole tree thing in greater detail. My process was much the same for all the other scenarios which is why I have not provided the details for them.
Scenario 3
Trees and soybeans
Last we assume that we have a cherry tree farm as has been proposed by Eric
The most effective use of space is a double row followed by a space. Breaking this down into 4×4 squares we get 4 basic shapes. The triple row, the double row, the triple row endcap and the double row end cap.
The triple endcaps can each hold 16-7 = 9 trees
The triple rows can eacn hold = 16-4 = 12 trees
The double rows can each hold = 16-8 = 8 trees
the double row endcap can each hold = 16-10 = 6 trees
Now, if we were to only fill the same space as the fields (to be a fair comparison, but you could fill more) that gives us space for 12 of each end cap and 60 of each row type. So that we can still level, we will replace one set of end caps with fields This way we can still reach all of the trees and we can still earn xp.
This arrangement would allow for 9×6 + 12×60 + 8×60 + 6×6 = 1290 trees
While I will admit this may seem horribly impractical, keep in mind that you can que up your trees. Even if you are an incredibly slow clicker and it takes you 2 sec per click per tree it would only take you 43 minutes to click though all the trees. 2 seconds per click is desperately slow btw. Most people should be able to click 6 to 8 times every 2 seconds. So you’re not spending much time clicking on the trees. However, you might want to find something else to do for awhile after you’re done clicking and your avatar runs around harvesting everything.
Anyway, 1290 cherry trees would yield $23220
however, to be fair because this can only done once every 2 days, we will assume you only see half that much each day. Now, we take that money and can invest all of it into soybeans which will yield 1161 xp and will leave us with $0. Assuming we leave our fields completely fallow between harvests. If we plant peppers we would get an extra 36 xp and $1,944. Reinvesting this much while still having enough to plant peppers would leave us at the end of it all with 1,389 xp and $24
Conclusions
So, in the end, basically if you just plant and harvest strawberries as much as possible you’ll level relatively quickly. When coupled with power leveling you can level very fast.
However, if money is what you are after. the more you can fill your farm with trees the more money you will make. Ideally, you would want to fill it with the higher level gifted trees. But because you can only get one of these each day it would take a far too long to replace a substantial portion of your farm with trees strictly by gifting. Buying trees of course will help you fill your farm with trees faster. but you should replace them with the gifted trees/animals as you get them since you will get even more money from them.
The only downside is that the more trees/animals your effectiveness at leveling via strawberries decreases. course even if you only have 12 fields left it’s only cut by half.

If you want to maximize cash income for your crops, wouldn’t it be better to plant grapes before power-leveling rather than peppers? Same XP, same growth time, but grapes give you almost another 80% cash back over peppers. Course that’s if you have access to grapes, which you have to work up to.
at the time this was written peppers were the crop that yielded the highest profit of all of the crops. You are correct that it is no longer the best crop in terms of profit.
At this point Peas give the highest cash returns. Of course just as peppers are no longer the best it wouldn’t surprise me if peas are eventually replaced with something else as well.
why do grapes, there are Sunflowers which are better or Peas which are even better and you receive +3 XP. These both only take 1 day to grow.
yes, but you may not be high enough level to grow those.
Besides buying with your credit card and filling out the forms online for FV cash.
What is formula for gaining more FV cash.
I just noticed my husband get faster FV cash than anyone of our farmville friends including me
Is farm cash linked to leveling up or a certain number of harvested squares?
Farm cash periodically goes up, but ive not figured out how yet.
Quick and Simple
When you first start, it is better to start with strawberries. You’ll notice you level very fast because of the plowing exp and planting exp every 4 hours. Then plant pumpkins/rice at night so you have time to sleep
Next is the combination of raspberries and cherry trees. In theory you can earn as much exp as with strawberries because of plowing exp every 2 hours (raspberries gives +0 exp). With the leftover money, you should buy cherry trees (+5 exp; cheap and harvest every 2 days).
Once you reach level 17, you can replace the raspberries with blueberries (+1 exp; more profit). Remember to plant cherry trees if you have extra money (buy around 200 cherry trees for ‘Knock on wood’ ribbon)
Also, the more you till the more “game dollars” you earn, you should add that every now and then tilling the soil earns you a game dollar, so in those terms rasberries are uniquely good too. on average you earn somewhere between 2-5 game dollars from tilling a full 12×12 plot.
I would like to point out that your conclusion is completely wrong.
If you have the time raspberries actually generate the same ammount of XP as Strawberries. You have to realise that because rasberries grow in 2 hours, you have to till the soil twice in every 4 hours. You therefore get 2xp every 4 hours from tilling the soil which is the same as you get from tilling and planting strawberries.
So your best bet is to stick to rasberries as they are more profitable than strawberries and give the same xp.
I’m at Level 20 and still cannot expand my farm! Any suggestions?
Expansion is based on the number of neighbors you have; not your experience level.
They’ve only coded for 14 x 14 and 16 x 16. Soon enough, the others will be available, but it will take a little bit of time. As of right now, no one playing the game can get anything above 16 x 16. They just have them viewable to give you farmville enthusiasts some hope.
I was wondering if you would recommend in scenario 2 to switch to blueberries instead of strawberries once I hit level 17.
interessting to see that i am not alone with this game. i have been crunching the numbers and made some business scenarios myself. but i don’t care for xps. all i want is the maximum profit and this is done with pepper. BUT: i haven’t analyzed the tree situation yet. as i see it right now it is possible to have 50×50=2500 trees on your field. if your harvest value is really as high as you listed it in chapter 4 the best way to earn coins should be trees (2500 lemon trees times 75 coins divided by five days until harvest equals 37.500 coins a day!!)… or am i missing something?!?
Ok, so I found a possible flaw in the whole, plant Soybeans instead of strawberries because for 5 more coins you get another experience point. That’s every 12 hours though, if you plant strawberries you only get 2 but if you also go 12 hours, harvesting, replowing, replanting 3 times you get way more experience. For example I have a 14×14 farm, So 196 multiplied by 3 for soybeans is 588. With strawberries it’s, 196 x 2 = 392, but multiplied by three you get 1176. So if you’re able to go in every four hours, to replant and such, strawberries are better.
He’s saying soybeans to power level. Not grow and harvest. Till, plant, delete, repeat. That’s what power leveling is. Your talking about till, plant, harvest, repeat.
how to get cash money farmville, including whether it is a bonus? I would like a flag in Farmville, while cash money $ 2, does not grow .. thanks
you have to purchase it with real money. by clicking on the purchase money button. If you want to play this game for free then its best to simply ignore the items which require money instead of coins.
how to get the paper money?
Farm Cash (not coins) def goes up now and again, i seem to notice it when i plant blueberries? but maybe its more to do with harvesting more frequently?
Or perhaps its linked to each time you level up?
Im on level 32 and ive noticed i get a lot less cash than i used to (much longer time between levels as you go higher)
hi..how do you change farm name in farmville?
You do not need to leave spaces in between trees – if your farmer can’t access it (or when he’s stuck somewhere) the fruit will automatically be harvested when you click on the tree, so he does not need to be close. So you could literally have a field full of trees with your farmer trapped somewhere in the middle, hehe
Howdy farmers!
I got a little question, coz i don’t really get the thing with the numbres and the levelling.
Assuming the Scenario 1:
When i harvest 144 Pepper-fields, i get $23328, right?
So when i re-plow all those fields -> minus $2160
Same when i plant Soy -> minus $2160
When i plant Pepper it takes me $10080
Now i wonder how you end up on 1540xp and 18 bucks left.
My calculation:
Harvest – RePlow – Plant Soy – RePlow – Plant Soy – RePlow – Plant Pepper – Wait to harvest again
In numbres:
$23328 [harvest]
-(5 x $2160) [RePlow and Plant Soy 1008xp]
————-
$12528
-$10080 [Plant Pepper 288xp]
————-
$2448 [Money left & 1296xp won]
What is my mistake? i bet you can explain me, but i don’t see it! and sorry if i am just dumb.
THX for the site and for the help.
I’m using AutoClickExtreme to record clicking all my fields. It’s not so easy to replace the clicks each time on the right spot but its a timesaver.
Download: http://www.download3000.com/download-autoclickextreme-count-reg-52561.html
I have also a forrest of 170 lime trees on the not ploweble edge my farmville land.
Ok I did some math, and I still place my money on Artichokes. To plant a 12×12 field, you need 10,080 coins. And even though it takes forever, with trees, animals, lottery, and helping on other farms, you at least have some income. Then when harvested you get 29,376 coins. Minus 2,160 for replowing you end up with 27,216. And repeating the cycle you end up gaining about ten thousand coins about every time. However this was before I learned about Power Leveling, so it may not be the best option. I might try one crop of Artichokes, for 27,216 then plant a throw away crop of strawberries or most likely soy beans you would end up with 22,896 and 432 experience for the soy beans alone. so…if my math is correct…it could be a good option especially for people who don’t log on everyday.
Ok, so now that I am a level 15, and can grow pineapples. I have figured out that they are way better than artichokes. Also, does this whole ribbon mechanic deter power leveling? If you’re like I am, and hate anything else on your farm besides plowed land, for the Pack Rat Ribbons, I just bought bales of hay. They’re 100 coins a piece, give you 5 experience, and count towards 1 decoration.
The sunflowers @ level 25 are excellent cash source. They are a 1-day crop, they cost 135+15 to till and plant and return 315 when harvested.
CHOICE!

How to harvesty fast?? any tips??
Thanks
Oh ya, forgot to mention you might want to continue with peppers until you get enough lime trees to spend all your time / clicks. The idea again, is to assume you only have X number of clicks to spend to avoid wasting your life. So until you get more trees you have more to spend on plants.
So recently in an attempt to salvage my sanity I’ve been recording which plants give the most xp and coins per click. The idea is that you’ll only want to click so many times in a day, so what gives you the most for your clicks?
Corn (best plant), passion fruit trees (best gift) and lime trees (best bought tree) came out on top via this method. With corn > passion > lime. Lime trees also give the most coins per space per day. I’ve actually sold my cherry, apple, plum, fig, avocado, cow, chicken and duck gifts since they involve far more clicking than other things. Even sold the cherries I bought.
Btw, I’m guessing lemon trees are the best for max profit without regard to clicking time now. They give almost as many coins per space per day as limes and they have a higher profit/cost which means you can fill your farm with them faster. But with a shorter harvest you have to click almost twice as much, so they’re not for me.
It sounds like you’re trying to determine how to maximize lazyiness
I am curious though. Did you take into account the fact that a field actually requires 3 clicks per harvest? Once to harvest, once to plow and once to plant. Compared to animals and trees where you simply click once and you’re done. Or did your comparison not look at trees vs. fields?
Yeah I counted 3 clicks for fields and 2 for trees. You do have slightly less dragging between click #1 & #2 for trees, but oh well.
“Maximize laziness”, heh
. The other extreme is to continue doing strawberries & pumpkins (used to fuel unharvested soybeans) for max xp, until filling up on 4356 lemon (lime?) trees which you must harvest every 3 days. I’m just looking for a middle ground by “budgeting my clicks”. Then you step up your farm to match your budget. Maybe you have hardly any time to play, then you wouldn’t get trees at all. Then you’d only get corn b/c it’s a better value per click than anything else, including trees. Or if that’s too little play time, you add something else with less coins per click but more per day.

The double rows can each hold = 16-8 = 8 trees
the double row endcap can each hold = 16-10 = 6 trees[/quote]
Could you draw that out or link to a picture? I have no idea where to leave spaces or how that effective setup is supposed to look like.
Sure thing
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc151/Steelowl_wow/treelayout.jpg
you can see how this configuration of 4×4 blocks (in red) are repeating. However, It seems the coding has changed such that you no longer need to be able to reach a tree to harvest it, which means you no longer need to do a configuration like this.
Hey, that xp/day thing looks a lot like my own recent table
.
Btw, for the tree farm I was actually doing trees/trees/plots rather than trees/trees/spaces, to limit waste. Though that only fills 1/3 the farm with cherry trees. But recently I noticed that farmville fixed the tree harvesting bug. Now even if you can’t walk to a tree it’ll still harvest it anyway. It might even be faster for this reason. So now you can pack your farm corner to corner with trees if you desire. Not that I’d have time to do this (and harvest them all). But if you have time and want to double your income, now it seems like it works.
very nice. BTW, I did some experimenting and it seems that goats really are the “best” in terms of what to fill your farm with. Not only do horses not generate as much money, but they actually occupy twice as much space. I still don’t have any information on the last tree which may prove to be even better. but for now it seems having a goat farm is the best way to go. The only downside is that you’d probably need a whole group of friends sending you goats in order to do this in any sort of reasonable time frame.
Ya I was assuming a limited number of gifts. Most gifts are better than cherry trees and should get preference. Even some purchased things were better, but they cost too much and don’t give much more. I think I figured 11 months until you came out ahead of cherry trees that way.
Now I’m guessing lemon trees would replace cherries because they give 2.8% profit per cost (less than cherries, but still good) and have a much high profit per space. But I haven’t checked that assumption. See also other post below.
yeah, that makes sense. Of course now that you’re required to have a certain number of neighbors to expand, it might be more reasonable to assume you can get a bunch of gifts everyday. Since there are a number of reasons to have a bunch of neighbors and the gifting process is fairly quick and painless.
Yeah I’m holding on to the better gifted items as well. But in the mean time I need to plant something.
Even with unlimited friends each person can only give 16 gifts which means the average person only receives 16 (unless my Facebook account is different from others’?). Unless you have some complex team scheme going on. And that’s the ideal. So far I’m seeing more like 25% of that ideal and half of those gifts I end up selling like I said above. So in 6 years they might fill my farm. Maybe if you have more involved friends you can drop it down to 2 years, but still.
I agree that any combination of Rice, Pumpkins and Strawberries will yield a higher xp rate then peppers if you do not consider power leveling. The numbers you were arriving at for rates can be easily reached by taking my “xp gained” column and dividing by 24. Since I considered a 24 hour period rather then an hourly rate.
As for the money, you contradict yourself.
Peppers: 3.347
Strawberries: 2.5
Pumpkin: 2.875
Rice: 3
Soybeans: 1.434
these numbers are your profit rates, and peppers as shown by your own math have the highest profit rate. It won’t matter if you consider peppers by the month or by the second. So long as you’re doing your math correctly peppers will always out perform strawberries.
My math is not as dis-similar from yours as you might think. Part of why I look at things on a daily and weekly basis is because it makes the numbers bigger which allows me to more readily see the differences. But those differences exist regardless what timescale you look at.
Now, there is one assumption that I make in my simulations and it’s because I feel it reflects actual players better. I am well aware that a farmVille day is 23 hours. rather then 24. But the reason why I treat it as a 24 is because it ridiculous to use the 23 hour timescale for planning. This is because most people can harvest something once every 24 hours, but nobody (unless they don’t have any commitments) can harvest something every 23 hours. The reason is pretty simple when you think about it. If I harvest at 9pm tonight, tomorrow night I’ll be harvesting at 8pm, the next night 7pm. etc. The time when I can harvest changes every day. More realistically, I might harvest at 9pm and then 8pm and then 9:30 and then 8:30. but essentially I’m able to harvest it every day roughly 24 hours after it was planted. the same is true of the plants that take longer then 1 day, since a 4 day crop would slide back 4 hours on harvest day from when I planted it. Which is still not enough for me to benefit from this effect even if I could harvest in the mornings and at night.
Of course, if you assume that you can realistically harvest the crops every 23 hours, this will only serve to increase how much money those plants make over the ones which take less then a day. So, I suppose profit wise, you are correct that technically it is possible to make even more money off of peppers then what i list. But realistically, you’ll see numbers closer to what I have listed.
I think your logic is flawed and possibly over-complicated.
Very simply, to level up the fastest, plant strawberries 3 times during the day pumpkins right before bed (or rice is you sleep for more than 12 hours — remember the wither time is a grace period). This leaves 4 hours of play room. It’s going to take time to harvest, re-plow (convert fallow land to plowed land), and re-plant. It is impossible to get a complete 6 harvests of strawberries in a 24 hour period.
Also, strawberries have the highest profit rate per coin spent followed by pumpkins, then rice.
I haven’t been playing for more than 4 days and I’m already a level 13 and have already expanded to a homestead (14×14).
**Remember that 1 FarmVille day = 23 real-time hours (http://zynga.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/586).
Very simple math (for profiting):
1. Figure the profit: [Plant Sells For] – [Cost of Plant] – [15 coin re-plot]
2. Divide profit by the time it takes the plant to grow.
Peppers yield 3.347 (rounded) coins per hour:
Peppers sells for 162 coins.
Peppers cost 70 coins.
Peppers take 23 hours (1 FarmVille day) to grow.
(162 – 70 – 15) / 23 =~ 3.347
Strawberries: 2.5
Pumpkin: 2.875
Rice: 3
Soybeans: 1.434 (rounded)
For leveling:
From your other post, plants under 1 day give 1 XP while 1 day or more give 2 XP.
Do the following math:
1. Add up the total XP for plowing and planting: [XP gained by planting] + [XP gained by plowing]
1a. XP gained by planting: If grow time is = 1 day, XP gained is 2.
1b. XP gained by plowing: 1
2. Divide total XP by the time it takes the plant to grow.
Strawberries yield .5 XP per hour:
1 XP for planting
1 XP for plowing
4 hour grow time
(1 + 1) / 4 = .5
Pumpkin: .25
Rice: .166 (rounded)
Peppers: 0.13 (rounded)
Soybeans: 0.13 (rounded)
Once you get up to a high enough level to get blueberries, this IMO seems to be the best way to level up. But you will have to be able to log on 4 times a day. (If you have access at work or maybe if you want to power up on the weekend and you’re free)
I’ll start the scenario: We’ll start with having a 12×12 field of Blueberries already planted at 10AM. We’ll end the scenario planting these blueberries to account for it. So in essence, I’m starting this scenario on the second log-in of the day.
10-2pm: Blueberries grow
2-2:30pm: Harvest Blueberries $13104
Plow + Replant Blubeberries -$9360
Exp: 288
2:30-6:30pm: Blueberries grow
6:30-7pm: Harvest Blueberries $13104
Plow + Replant Blueberries -$9360
Exp: 288
7-11pm: Blueberries grow
11-11:30pm: Harvest Blueberries $13104
Plow + Plant Pumpkins -$6480
Exp: 288
7:30am: Harvest Pumpkins $9792
Here’s where the power leveling comes in. Adding everything up, you will have $23904. Now you subtract the amount to plow and plant blueberries that I talked about earlier to start your day off ($9360) and you have $14544 left to power level with. Divide $14544 by cost of plowing and planting soybeans gives you about 484 times to plot/plant and delete the soybeans. This gives an exp of 1452. (484×3) Now remember only to do 484 soybeans because you need that $9360 that’s left after power leveling to start your field of blueberries.
So assuming it takes you 45 min-1 hr to power level, you have 1.5 hours left until 10am to start your day off again. This give you some cushion time in any part of the day to either sleep in, (if you don’t want to get up at 7:30am!) or in case you can’t plow and replant exactly on time. You can also start this at a later time and just shift the times if you’d like if you day starts ealier or later then this.
Now you have a field full of blueberries again that started growing at 10am. Here is where the circle begins again and you start from the top. If I did my calculations correct, you will end the day with 2604 exp (288@2pm + 288@6:30pm + 288@11pm + 1452power leveling + 288@10am) in 1 day with an insignificant amount of money left.
If you dont mind me asking, can you explain that in a more easier terms cuase i dont get a word of what
you are saying!
Also plant pepers soybeans and wheat ALL in one day so you will somthing to harvest each day oh and artichokes added to that.I do that and make 3,789 quid in one day combined with strawberries and pumpkins. You will be rich in no time!
heh, sorry if it rambles a bit. But basically, I examined a bunch of different situations to see which method allows you to level the quickest. It turns out that planting and harvesting strawberries when combined with the power leveling strategy (that I talk about in my power leveling article) is the best.
However, if you don’t care about leveling and just want to make a bunch of money. Your best bet is to fill your farm with trees and peppers.
I know the article is a pretty long winded way of saying that (even after cutting out a fairly large portion of it), but it’s basically the proof that shows that what I’m saying is accurate.
